The heaviness that occurs when reading some letters of the Quran is given various names: tafkheem, isti’la, taghlidh, etc. Do they all mean the same thing?
Here’s a side-by-side comparison. Tafkheem is the overarching term for heaviness. The tafkheem of some letters is specifically referred to as isti’la, while the tafkheem of the laam (in certain conditions and riwayat) is called taghlidh.
Allah SWT knows best.
